Lagos State Government Cautions Residents Against Breaching Estate Regulations

The Lagos State Government has cautioned residents of government-owned estates against engaging in unwholesome practices that violate the rules and regulations outlined in their allocation letters.

The Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, issued the warning following an enforcement exercise at the Lateef Kayode Jakande Estate in Igando, where some residents were reported for energy theft by bypassing the electrical connections installed in their apartments.

He stated, “In recent times, the Ministry of Housing has been inundated with reported cases of energy theft, neglect of shared facilities, refusal to pay statutory estate dues, and other contraventions. These disturbing acts of rule-breaking are being observed in some state government estates occupied by allottees who either purchased the houses outright or accessed them through the rent-to-own scheme.

“The Ministry of Housing will not tolerate situations where residents bypass and abandon existing infrastructure such as water systems, electricity, and other shared services, opting instead for individual solutions that distort the estate’s landscape.”

The commissioner also expressed disapproval of residents who broke the seals of apartments previously barricaded for various violations and warned of severe consequences for such actions.

He stated, “Although some residents made appeals for forgiveness, the ministry will not tolerate this behavior in any of the state government estates again. The Lagos State Government has provided all necessary facilities in government-owned estates; it is the responsibility of residents to maintain these facilities through the state government-appointed facilities managers.

“The residents were also reminded that every Lagos State government housing estate is designed to promote ideal communal living, and resident representatives should be supported to ensure the sustainability of the estate facilities.”
