Surveyors Call for Stronger Enforcement to Curb Quackery

The Association of Private Practicing Surveyors of Nigeria, a subgroup of the Nigerian Institute of Surveyors, has emphasized the need for collective action to address the widespread issue of quackery in the surveying profession through stronger enforcement.

During the 2024 annual professional workshop and luncheon, themed “The Practice of Cadastral; Understanding the Technicalities, Ethics, Market Dynamics, Policies, Innovation/Reforms, Value Added Services, and its Politics,” the surveyors urged their colleagues to uphold ethical standards. They stressed the importance of leveraging technology to promote sustainable and high-quality cadastral practices that deliver reliable services.

The guest lecturer, Olumide Adewebi, the immediate past Vice President of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, encouraged practitioners to avoid unethical behavior and other practices that could damage their professional reputation.

Adewebi stated, “Surveying is a competitive business. Professionals in the field should stop the cycle of undercutting and agent signing, while also making a concerted effort to tackle the challenges in cadastral practice to ensure long-term sustainability.”

“There should be improved training, education, and regulations to combat quackery in order to promote growth and ensure a more profitable cadastral practice in the state.”

In his welcome address, the Chairman of the APPSN Lagos branch, Ibikunle Adaranijo, explained that the event was organized to educate professionals on emerging trends and to equip them with knowledge and insights in cadastral practice.

He also called for the support of all stakeholders in the fight against quackery in the profession, reaffirming the association’s commitment to continue its campaign against this threat.

“We will not back down from our campaign against quackery. Even on our radio program, which airs every Friday on Radio Lagos, we continue to emphasize this issue, and our efforts are already showing positive results.

“It’s not just quackery that we’re addressing; unethical practices are also a major focus. Recently, some surveyors in the Office of the Surveyor General were suspended for a year due to unethical conduct, and they are currently facing trial in court for their actions.

“We will continue to educate, train, and re-train our members to keep up with the latest trends in the profession,” he said.
